This fact has been confirmed with some recent small budget films, which have done exceptionally well at the Box Office. It’s not just about the marketing gimmick and sponsorship deals. Success of low budget films depends on the genre, premise, story, and financing of the film, as well as the actors and their performances.

SRK-Kajol: Bollywood’s favourite on-screen pair

Shahrukh Khan and Kajol: the couple which struck gold with their first movie together ‘Bazigar’, continue their winning streak every time they team up together for a project. It’s been almost two decades now, yet they never fail to mesmerize the audiences.

The on-screen chemistry between the duo has been adored ever since they played Raj and Simran in Aditya Chopra’s ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’. Besides the on-screen chemistry, their off-screen friendship also plays a part of a major catalyst which makes them click together in an instance and the viewers cannot help but love them.

Lagaan

Here are a few trivia facts about this patriotism inculcating blockbuster:

• The first Bollywood production in 30 years to use synchronized sound. An Arri 535 camera, brought over from Germany, was used to facilitate sync-sound recording
• Lagaan has many parallels with ‘Bhuvan Shome’. Amitabh Bachchan is the narrator in both the movies. The hero and heroine’s name are the same, Bhuvan and Gauri
• Suhasini Mulay who played the heroine in ‘Bhuvan Shome’, played the hero’s mother in ‘Lagaan’. Both movies were shot in Gujarat
• Ameesha Patel auditioned for the role of Gauri. Sonali Bendre also wanted to play Gauri but Aamir Khan felt that she looked like a foreigner
• Abhishek Bachchan was offered a role in the film but turned it down
• Aamir Khan got his ears pierced so that he could actually wear earrings

Khans rule the roost in Bollywood!

Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan are the undisputed kings of Bollywood. Having churned out some of the biggest blockbusters in Bollywood, these Khans are accredited with highest grossing films.

Shahrukh’s ‘Ra.One’ may have received mixed reviews, but it topped the list of Bollywood grosser in terms of a weekend opening as the figure was pegged at Rs. 52,93,00,000 followed by Salman’s ‘Dabangg’ at Rs. 48,82,00,000 and ‘Ready’ at Rs. 42,23,00,000.

‘Ra.One’ and ‘Bodyguard’ also had the highest worldwide openings with the figures at Rs. 90,04,00,000 and Rs. 87,64,00,000 respectively.

However, despite immense popularity and rivalry amongst the Khans, it was Hrithik starrer ‘Agneepath’ that had the biggest opening day gross revenue of Rs. 21,72,00,000 with ‘Ra.One’ and ‘Ready’ following closely at Rs. 14,76,00,000 and Rs. 13,33,00,000.

But ahead of them all is Aamir Khan’s ‘Three Idiots’ which has been the highest grosser in recent years with an amount of Rs. 202,57,00,000 followed by ‘Dabangg’ and ‘Ra.One’ at Rs. 140,10,00,000 and Rs. 114,78,00,000 respectively. ‘Three Idiots’ was also the highest Bollywood grosser worldwide with gigantic figure of Rs. 385 Crores followed by ‘Dabangg’ at Rs. 215 Crores and ‘My Name is Khan’ at Rs. 200 Crores at the second and third positions.

May will turn up the heat at the BO

Come May, and Bollywood cinegoers can expect some big releases! Jannat 2 and Ishaqzaade are all on their way to entertain the audiences.

‘Jannat 2’ succeeded at the Box Office owing to its, story, cast and treatment of the script. Another crime-thriller from Vishesh films, the movie is about Sonu Dilli (Emraan Hashmi), a greedy gun salesman, also tagged as “KKC – Kutti Kameeni Cheez” by his customers. He falls in love with Sonia (Esha Gupta), who deserts him after knowing his past. How Sonu transforms and gets back Sonia forms the rest of the film. Jannat releases on 4th May.

‘Ishaqzaade’ is the debut film for film maker Boney Kapoor’s son, Arjun Kapoor. Parineeti Chopra who has already made an impressive portrayal in ‘Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl’ will be seen opposite him. The film is a love story set in the rustic and political milieu of North India. The film will release on 11th May.

Of all May releases, ‘Fanaa’ directed by Kunal Kohli, under the YRF banner, has been the highest grosser till date with an approximate collection of Rs. 52 Crores nett in India and an additional $6 Million in the overseas markets. At the end of theatrical run, the film grossed around Rs. 104 Crores. It was Aamir Khan’s first outing with the Yash Raj banner.

With quite a few major releases lined up for May, will any of them be able to cross Fanaa’s record collections?

Shaitan

‘Shaitan’ is a skilfully constructed film with a racy musical score, rich filming and effective execution as its strong points. The movie is considered by many to be the elevated interpretation of Anurag Kashyap’s first film ‘Paanch’, which was prohibited because it was too ominous and damaging to view.

‘Shaitan’, garnered collecter Rs. 7 million (Rs 0.70 crore) at the Box Office, on the day it released.

• Do Dooni Chaar: Made in Rs. 2 Crores but went on to recover over Rs. 6 Crores.
• Love Sex Aur Dhokha: Made in Rs. 1.5 Crores but earned Rs. 7 Crores.
