The Movie Production BIBLE – The Pre-production (Casting – 16)

The Cast and Crew series of Pre – Production continues with two important crew members who bring life to a Bollywood Film and make it look larger than life. The Set Designer and Set Decorator, who create and are responsible for realizing the structures, interior spaces and interior decoration of a film set. A Set Designer works closely with Production Designer and Art Director.

An interesting aspect of set designs can be seen in the two most famous period films of Bollywood. One was 1960’s ‘Mughal-E-Azam’ and another was 2008’s ‘Jodhaa Akbar’. Though both of the films surround around the life of famous Mughal Emperor Akbar, yet the way the sets were designed in both the movies was stunningly different.

K. Asif, Director of ‘Mughal-E-Azam’ went for lavish designs as spectacle was essential during 1960s in Bollywood. On the other hand, Director Ashutosh Gowariker of ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ went for historically accurate sets so that the more informed audiences can relate it to the Mughal period.
